THE TIMELINE
Tracing the Vision from
Plan to Reality

Central Branch Replacement
The Columbia Downtown Plan, approved by the County Council in 2010 and updated in 2018, called for the demolition of the existing Central Branch as part of the revitalization and redevelopment of Downtown Columbia.
“Downtown Columbia continues to grow as a vibrant and inclusive community that reflects Jim Rouse’s original vision of a ‘garden for growing people.' Together, we are taking bold steps to make that vision a reality by ensuring that every child has access to a world-class education, every resident has the opportunity to thrive, and every neighbor can find a place to call home. With new progress on affordable housing and a much-needed Central Library at the Columbia Lakefront, we are building a Downtown that embodies innovation, connection, and opportunity for all.”

“This is some of the most desirable real estate around and it’s anchored in education, it’s anchored in community upliftment, it’s anchored in community involvement, it’s anchored in community space. Nothing will happen unless community is a part of it. That is the power of what we are seeing here.”
